NIWA’s purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand’s aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders.
NIWA uses a variety of statistical and mathematical techniques to study the distribution, abundance and dynamics of exploited fish species and bycatch species such as seabirds and marine mammals, impact of fishing on the benthic and bycatch species, and to study marine ecosystems. This work is done in projects contracted to NIWA by the Ministry of Primary Industries, the Department of Conservation and the fishing industry. Much of this research underpins advice given to clients for managing exploitation and bycatch issues; research on marine ecosystem dynamics may also be involved.
We have an opening for a Scientist to carry out or assist with this quantitative research and consulting. Specific aspects will include designing abundance surveys, modelling marine populations, analysis of data (including producing new methods), object-oriented computer programming, generalised linear modelling, estimating Bayesian posterior distributions and conducting simulation studies.
This position will suit a masters or PhD (or equivalent degree and experience), including mathematical or statistical modelling, and a programming language, like C++ or R. No fisheries knowledge needed, but it would be advantage. Likewise, a good knowledge of applied statistics is an advantage. We are seeking a self-motivated and results-orientated, conscientious and well organised individual, with a keen eye-for-detail. You will also have exceptional interpersonal skills, be adaptable and be committed to on-going professional development.
